This course Design Prototype – Variations of Applied Systems (VAS) is designated as the advanced yet efficient entry to the latest computational architecture and design methodologies. The workshop highlights a series of collaborative research in system and prototyping as its goal.
A system may be defined as a set of components that shape a whole and can be found in various fields of matter and organization ranging from nature to culture and society, among others. Our system research begins by studying certain system examples and extracting their properties as seeds of ruled components, aiming to achieve their respective design goals in practice through variational design. The rules and patterns extracted from these systems will be used in prototypes, which will be reusable across practices due to the intentional omission of localization and are, thus, designated to be the most abstract form of system application, whereas the system parameter will be utilized and transformed into the customized control of our targeted design quality. The prototypes can be applied to any applicable and practical project.

Phase 1： Rhino & GH
In this phase, Students are going to learn essential software skills on rhino and grasshopper. Unlike traditional design, parametric design is, by nature, based on algorithmic processes. This approach to design is made possible by GH. In order to help students fully grasp its mechanisms, the emphasis will be placed on a thorough review of the software’s core concept of data structure (List and Tree). It also includes an introduction of several GH plugins such as, Lunchbox, Weaverbird, Kangaroo, and Ladybug.
Phase 2：System & Prototype Design
The highlight of Phase 2 features research lab of the system and prototyping with an open-forum for discussion. The goal of this research platform is to increase depth of students’ knowledge in contemporary design and technologies whereas it largely allows students to explore and apply their new skills through group projects. 3D printer is also available for students to fabricate their design.
Phase 3： Design
Problem – Technology – Develop, this phase is an open-forum for discussion. The focus here will be on group projects of various scales, in which students can start to apply their new skills in conjunction with their realization using technology.

Tuning Synesthesia (TS) is an interdisciplinary team of designers and engineers, dedicated to a sustainable identity in design and its development. The team focuses on a thorough and proactive research of existing systems and design prototypes for application in design and architecture practice; the result of which has been publicly acclaimed in the format of a series of computational design workshops held successfully in Beijing in the year 2016. The team expertise extends to several areas in interdisciplinary system research, including architecture, computer science, nature science, literature, art and music; and applied to master planning, architectural design, building skin standardization, landscape design, and web application. As specialized consultants in computational design, the team has collaborated on projects with many global and domestic firms, some of which have been awarded notable recognition, both practical and academic.
